How to prepare your dog for their first boarding stay

The short answer: Book a short trial first, keep your dog's food and routine the same, confirm vaccines a couple of weeks ahead, and write down anything unusual — then keep the goodbye short and upbeat.

Most dogs settle into boarding faster than their owners expect. What makes the biggest difference isn't the fanciest bed — it's predictability. The more of your dog's normal life that comes with them, the quicker they relax.

1. Start with something short

If your dog has never stayed away from home, a single daycare day or a one-night stay before a long trip is the best preparation there is. Your dog learns the place and the people, and comes home — which teaches them that you come back.

2. Check vaccines two to three weeks ahead

Boarding and daycare usually require rabies, distemper (DHPP) and Bordetella. Some vaccines need time to become effective, and vet appointments fill up before holidays, so check your records early and ask your vet what timing they recommend.

3. Pack their normal food — and a little extra

A sudden diet change is one of the most common reasons for an upset stomach during a stay. Pack enough of your dog's regular food for every day plus a day or two extra, pre-portioned if you can.

  • Their regular food (plus a buffer)
  • Medications with clear written instructions
  • A familiar item that smells like home — a worn T-shirt works well
  • Their usual leash and a collar with ID tags
  • Your vet's name and phone number

4. Write down the details only you know

Does your dog hide when it thunders? Eat only after a walk? Pull toward other dogs? Those details help a sitter get the first evening right. Put them in your pet's profile or the booking notes rather than relying on a quick chat at drop-off.

5. Keep the goodbye short

Long, emotional goodbyes tell a dog something is wrong. Hand over the leash, say a normal goodbye and go. Most dogs are sniffing around and exploring within minutes.

Quick questions

How long does it take a dog to settle into boarding?

Many dogs relax within the first evening; anxious dogs may take a day or two. A short trial stay beforehand shortens this a lot.

Should I bring my dog's bed?

It's optional. A familiar blanket or worn T-shirt usually gives the same comfort and is easier to carry.
