Protecting your dog's paws on Baltimore streets, summer and winter

A dog and walker on a tree-lined path in Baltimore

The short answer: In summer walk early or late and test the pavement with your hand for seven seconds; in winter wipe paws after every walk to remove salt and consider booties or paw balm.

City walks are great for dogs, but pavement, brick and cobblestone can be hard on paws in both extremes of Baltimore weather.

Summer: the seven-second test

Press the back of your hand to the pavement for seven seconds. If it's uncomfortable for you, it's too hot for paws. Walk early in the morning or after sunset, choose shady routes, and carry water.

Winter: salt and ice

  • Wipe paws with a damp cloth after every walk to remove de-icing salt
  • Trim the fur between toes so ice doesn't ball up
  • Try a paw balm or booties if your dog tolerates them
  • Watch for limping or licking — signs of irritation

All year

Check paws regularly for cuts, cracked pads or anything stuck between the toes, and ask your vet about anything that doesn't heal quickly.
