Which vaccines does my dog need for boarding and daycare?
The BluePawSky team · 4 min read

The short answer: Most providers require rabies, distemper (DHPP) and Bordetella; bring or upload current records, and talk to your vet a few weeks ahead about timing and whether your dog needs anything else.
Whenever dogs share space, vaccines protect every dog in the group. Requirements vary by provider, but three come up almost everywhere.
Rabies
Rabies vaccination is required by law for dogs in Maryland, and every reputable boarding or daycare provider will ask for proof.
Distemper (DHPP)
Often given as a combination vaccine that also covers hepatitis (adenovirus), parvovirus and parainfluenza. Puppies receive a series of doses, so young dogs may not be eligible for group care until the series is complete.
Bordetella
Bordetella is one of the causes of 'kennel cough', a respiratory illness that spreads where dogs are close together. It comes in injectable, oral and intranasal forms; your vet will recommend which and how far ahead of a stay to give it.
Plan a few weeks ahead
- Check expiry dates on your records now
- Book vet visits early before holidays
- Keep a digital copy handy for drop-off
- Ask your vet about anything specific to your dog's health or age
